$5,000 should mean a lot to these athletes, especially in this economy. $5k could mean rent is paid for five months, or they could pay their living expenses for a few months. Kudos to the USATF Foundation for stepping up their game this year.
Also, Flanagan and Erin Donahue have dropped Cook. Flanagan is obviously a bigger name than Donahue, but Donahue was an Olympian last year and took tremendous steps under Cook as well.
Tony Reavis has a thing about referring to elite athletes as "professionals", and when sports fans think of pros they think of people who light cigars with $100 bills.
For the athletes who get these kinds of grants, maybe we should call them "small business owners". For anyone who runs a struggling small business, $5000 is like an answer to their prayers. My sister-in-law is forever wondering how she's going to make it to next week.
